GYAAN ASHRAY

Understanding Activism and the need to incorporate it with Architecture was understood in this Winter School workshop of 10 days. It allowed us to understand how designers can efficiently propose a solution to address challenges of society and encourage education.

The need to utilize terrace spaces becomes as important as regular space efficient planning.  The motive was to build a transportable infrastructure that transforms into a study pavilion for the women folk of a well known slum of Ahmedabad. Efforts were taken as a team to develop strategies of a transformable 1:1 light infrastructure.

The three main components included the structural skeleton, the fabric skin and the tarpaulin roofing.

The construction included basic kit-of-parts construction, with metal pieces welded onto each other and attached to base roller plate.

It was painted on and later was sheathed with chosen fabric cut out pieces in a simple knot technique. Which also allowed easy change for future if necessary.

Finally the blackboard and shoe-stand were added to complete the entire classroom which gave rise to "Gyaan Ashray" (Knowledge Shelter - literal meaning).
